Some Assembly Required - Maybe More for Some than Others
This is a sturdy unit, with adequate instructions, even for a novice (like me). It would be nice if the packet came with an extra screw in each size. My only other suggestion might be for Closet Maid to pre-stamp each piece with the "name" it is given in the instructions - especially in light of the fact that some boards are the same size, but have a different pattern of pre-drilled holes. You can see what I mean, below. I am a smart woman. People even tell me that, sometimes. Most don't know that I am terrible at "spatial ability" - I can't figure out how to put things (like puzzles) together very well. My brain just doesn't see that way. But today I un-boxed the shelving unit (some assembly required) I ordered in a fit of over-confidence while surfing the web at 2 a.m. a few weeks ago. I gathered my tools - a screwdriver and a hammer, just like the instructions told me to. I reviewed how many of every screw there was, and what they were called ("assembly" screw, that's an "assembly" screw -- I would even say it out loud to reinforce the concept). I counted the pre-cut, pre-drilled boards and stacked them neatly into piles by size. I bribed the 9 year-old to help gramma, and he did so willingly, at first. I got the side board connected to the top board, (or maybe it was the bottom board) and was feeling fairly proud of myself. But the instructions called for me to fit "short dowels" into pre-drilled holes in the top board (or maybe it was the bottom board). But the stupid dowels wouldn't fit! So I pulled out the instructions and realized I had picked up a horizontal divider when what I needed was a fixed shelf (same size but the dowels would fit into this one - who knew!). So I unscrewed the first two boards, and grabbed a post-it notepad and labeled ALL the boards - just in case. I had the 9-year old help me again hold the boards while I reattached the fixed shelf to the side board (or maybe it was a top board). Once again, when it came time to screw the top board (or maybe bottom?) to the vertical board, I realized there was no pre-drilled hole! The 9-year old had the best view (and better vision) and noticed immediately that the pre-drilled hole was on the wrong side. So we detached the screws (again) and turned the board around (I was so sure I had it right this time, too.) And the re-screwing was far quicker. But... you guessed it, I had the finished side (only one of the four sides was finished) pointing the wrong direction... so we backtracked. Again. Eventually, the 9-year old wandered off to play with his brother. He told me I should be more careful. Duly noted. And I urged him to keep that play appointment in the other room - pronto. So, with careful re-reading of the instructions (in three languages!) and diligence with the post-it notes (that kept sliding off the slick finish), I continued to assemble the shelf-unit. With only one near amputation when the "real wood!" board (probably that stupid fixed shelf, or maybe it was the vertical divider) slid out of my grip and landed faint millimeters from my toe. That board was heavy, too! It even shook the house! Of course it did. Anyway, I counted and there were precisely eighteen "assembly screws" and not one more and not one less. I guarded them with my life, counting before and after every potty break and coffee run. Finally, with the unit mostly assembled, I came to the "backing" (which turned out to be a folded piece of cardboard-hey, what happened to the "real wood"?). And it turned out, there were only three, despite the fact there were six openings. And now you know my sense of "style" is as absent as my spatial ability. Covering only three of the six squares provides a unique "look" - at least to all non-OCD customers. Nevertheless, I persisted. Each piece of folded cardboard was nailed down with, I kid you not, 12 teeny pin-like nails, called "nails" in the instructions (Ciou, Ciavo, Nail - that whole 3 languages thing). And these things were designed by an absolute 4-star genius. Imagine the amount of research it must have taken to size these pins to the exact the depth of my thumb! I was in awe. Because that precision measurement resulted in me not being able to even "start" the nail without slamming into my thumb. Thirty-six times, if you don't count all the ones that fell out before I could get the nail stabilized. I checked for "hacks to avoid hitting your thumb" on my phone, after only five or six nails (I told you I was smart) and discovered that you can hold a nail between the teeth of your comb (or your husband's comb, if he is not at home). Bonus, as you are pounding the bejabbers out of everything in the vicinity of your microscopic nail-pin, the comb appears to act as a protective agent for the shelf (or maybe it was the horizontal divider). The comb, however, did turn out to be mostly a total loss. But I did it. I assembled a "some assembly required" shelving unit and it only took me six hours. PS - you may need ice for the finger you forgot to move during the flailing/so-called hammering you did prior to the comb hack. PPS - and save the ice because it turns out that all those boards nailed together are far heavier than the single board that missed your toe earlier. Enjoy!

Storage cube
Nothing too fancy. Simple storage cube with easy directions. I have 4 of them now. I love the white color because it's so bright and makes it look so clean. It wipes off easy if anything is spilled on it. I would recommend wiping anything up right away. Things like kool-aid will stain (yay kids *lol*) and use a coaster if a drink is set on it. It will warp due to condensation.

Sturdy enough for the job
Bought a 12-cube & a 3-cube storage unit and combined them to make an L-shape shelf for many of my lego sets. Omitting some of the cube partition pieces, the middle sections are still a little loose. So, if I need to take this shelf down for some reason, i may add some wood glue to the dowels for better security.

Oh my
Got four of these and spent the day putting three together. Can't assemble the fourth because each box was missing a part needed for assembly (two were each missing a screw, two were each missing a long dowel). I had to “borrow” from the fourth shelf to finish the other three. Ridiculous. My recommendations if you're considering this: 1. Go to the hardware store and buy brass screws. They will look better, you won't need to use the cheesy plastic screw covers that will inevitably fall off anyway, and you'll have enough screws to actually assemble your shelf — because you can count and ClosetMaid can't. I haven't figured out how to replace the missing dowel pieces. Maybe the hardware store will have something similar. The fourth unit is still unassembled because I had to cannibalize screws and dowels from it to assemble the first three. Very annoying. 2. Pay attention to which side is better on the four horizontal pieces (labeled B and C). Because there's no packaging between the wood pieces in the box, some have rub marks, particularly where they are adjacent to the smaller vertical pieces (D). One side may have marks but the other side won't. 3. When assembling, put both sides (labeled A) on before putting the top piece (B) on. It's a bit easier. I tried it both ways. I'm neither young nor particularly handy, and I managed to put them together using only a medium sized Phillips screwdriver — or I would have if all required parts had been included. I was only able to assemble 3 of 4. Absolutely frustrating that companies don't include the correct number of parts needed to assemble. 4. Don't bother with the cardboard backs supplied for five of the cubbies. They're folded — which means they look terrible, even worse than cheap veneer on cardboard should look. Stupid decision to fold them because the shipping box is wide enough that the backing cardboard squares don't have to be folded, but they are which makes them even uglier. Buy 11” square square canvas totes or baskets instead. I bought beige Criusia canvas totes. The shelves semi-sturdy. Not as good as the last sets of cubes I bought at Costco which were made of MUCH thicker MDF, but these are not too rickety. Unfortunately, Amazon shipped these with the post office which mean they took several weeks to arrive. The tracking information was gobbledygook, as usual for the post office. I so wish we could see which shipper will be used — and buy things elsewhere when USPS is used. The boxes are VERY heavy. I've attached a photo showing the first shelf I assembled.

Wish they hadn't come damaged
I ordered 2 of these shelves. They seem decent for the price. I assembled one, as it was less damaged, I'm debating assembling the second as there are no edges that aren't chipped/smashed. Almost every board in both sets had damage. One shelf, I was able to hide it by using it lengthwise. The second I'm seeing, no matter how I use it, the damage is going to show. Aside from that, assembly was quick and easy, and seem pretty sturdy. Perfect size for the storage cubes. Adding that I Amazon is not letting me exchange it for the same item, so unfortunately I'm stuck with a beat up shelf, or no shelf at all.

VERY WHITE, and OK quality.
I was so desperate to get one of these for the kids bedroom. I’m happy with it, BUT I think I prefer IKEA since it would have only been $25 more (give or take). But this will do just great for now. It came in good condition as well.

honest review + advice when building
honest review: it is particle pressboard, with vinyl on top so its not real solid wood. it is easy to assemble, the instructions are quite clear and easy to follow. the backs of the cubicles are cardboard like material, quite thin and are bent in half so they do have a crease once unfolded. one corner of the bookshelf is kind of damaged and lifting up. no pieces were missing. some advice for putting it together: make sure the bottom edges has a bit of a lip on it so that it doesn't wobble from the screw in the middle of the bottom. using a level isn't a bad idea either. overall it is nice, seems sturdy enough. i bought 2 6 cubicle ones instead of 1 12 cubicle one because it was cheaper.

A good shelf for the price
This shelf is one of the press board wonders of the modern era. Look at the price and the materials it's made out of and you can get an idea of what to expect. If you don't load it up or move it around too much I think it will last quite awhile. The backing doesn't cover the entire shelf, there are just little cardboard squares that you nail on with tiny finishing nails. They don't offer any support like a real back would. That was disappointing to me. The shelf was not handled with care and had scratches and scrapes on it, I don't know if that was the delivery company or what happened, there were a few key pieces missing and it was a serious problem because I didn't notice until it was half assembled. At that point I was supposed to somehow get it sent back in order to get a refund or a new shelf, they wouldn't just send the missing pieces. It was unusable in the state it arrived in and they couldn't be bothered to keep spare parts around like most places do. In the end they worked it out, but it was a hard earned shelf considering it was such a cheap thing! It looks really nice now that it's got all its pieces and its set up. It masquerades well as a more expensive shelf! It's useful and it had a happy ending, so all is well. Just remember, this isn't a high priced item and you do get what you pay for!

6 stars!
Wonderful, easy to assemble, brilliant instructions, look good. I fixed them to the wall in case my grandson decided to climb but they are probably sturdy enough for normal use without that in normal circumstances. Wall fixing is included though for safety reasons.

Holds loads of items, great storage
I love this storage unit. I bought two of them and stacked them on top of each other. They are simple with clean lines and classic white. The cubes make for really versatile storage of different kinds of items and can add colourful drawers as well to brighten up the unit and match your decor etc. I put them together on my own so pretty simple to put up. Looked fairly modest when I put them up in size but they held loads of item. Put everything I wanted to put away in there and still had room for future storing. Very happy. Only thing I'd say is that the backings looked fairly flimsy like cardboard but since I never wanted to put them on that didn't bother me, just put it against a wall.

Ikea same price better quality
I was disappointed when this product arrived broken. The corners were smashed by being dropped by the postal service. The return was great, they shipped out a replacement the same day the broken one was delivered. I ordered the white one and the white coding was so thin you could see through the white to the particleboard. It was easy to assemble, abet a bit wobbly. I wanted it as a makeshift divider between my living room and dining room but the back is unfinished and the particleboard is ugly. It came with white screw covers, but the screws stick up above the case, so even with the cover it looks tacky. If it wasn't so much work to take it apart I would return it. I would say that you get what you pay for, but I ordered the KALLAX Shelf unit, white30 3/8x57 7/8 " (77x147 cm) $79.99 (CAN) from Ikea and am very happy with the quality.
