Declining Quality?
Update 2022-01-22: This continues to be my favorite winter jacket. I often wear it outside of work because it's so warm, fairly durable, and it's also not too bulky. Despite the difference in lining noted in my original review, the heat retention doesn't appear to be degraded as a result. I've since purchased a 4th jacket due to the same failed stitching. I still get about 2 winters out of the coat before the stitching along the reflective strips starts to give out. Part of the problem for me is that it catches on things, like the winch bar I use to secure the straps on my trailer. Also, the reflective strips will start to get dull after 3-4 washes, though that's not the fault of Charles River. Other than the stitching not holding up to industrial working conditions there really isn't anything bad to say. Also, when comparing this jacket to "cheaper" alternatives (particularly those sold at some of the major truck stops) I've found this one to be more comfortable, warmer, and better fitting. The fabric on this jacket is just as durable while being more flexible than the alternatives. The other important factor is price. This jacket is only (depending on sales) a few dollars more than the equivalent alternatives at the truck stops. Sure, there are cheaper coats that can run half this price, but they are of lower specs and not an apples to apples comparison. In my opinion there's only 3 ways that this jacket could be made better: 1) stronger thread and double stitching along the reflective strips 2) the addition of a zippered removable winter hood 3) a redesign into a two part jacket with an outer wind-and-water proof shell and an inner removable fleece liner. It would result in a slightly higher combined cost BUT with the advantages of 3-4 season wearability and only partial replacement cost if (when) the outer layer becomes damaged/worn out. In my usage I'd probably need to replace the outer shell yearly due to constant wear and tear while the inner and hood sections would easily last me many years. Original Review from 2019-11: This is the 3rd time I've gotten this same jacket. The first 2 were identical, but this one is slightly different. The item and tag are the same and the quality appears just as good as the others. Unfortunately, despite the description on the tag stating that it is lined with soft, black fleece 13.76oz/lyd, as were the first 2 that I owned, the lining of this one is a grey fleece and feels noticeably thinner. I have to wonder whether this is a cheaper "Amazon" version of the same jacket. Otherwise they appear the same. Just received the 3rd one so time will tell. As a flatbed truck driver these jackets have been subjected to a lot of wear and tear and get thoroughly dirty every winter. They typically last 1.5-2 winters before the stitching on the 3M reflective strips gives out. Since the stitching for the reflective strips is shared with the jacket's seems, then the jacket basicly falls apart. The older ones were VERY warm and stopped the wind very well. Time will tell whether this new one will be just as good or if it will fall short. One thing that is both good and bad about this jacket is the lack of a hood. Many jackets like this include a think fold up hood that stores in the collar. While a nice idea it makes the collar huge and uncomfortable. The omission here is a good thing, although a zip on/off removable hood would have been a nice option for those really nasty days.

What I needed.
This jacket is an excellent product, for the money (I paid $60.44). It's not bulky and layers very nicely. Zippers are good quality. Paired with thermal underwear and a flannel shirt, it's all you need for any temperatures north of antarctica. The arms billow out slightly to provide more dead air insulation and more reflective surface area, and are also insulated (although not lined with fleece -- they are instead lined with a satin-like layer with a third layer of insulation between the shell and lining, which makes it easier to slip in and out of the garment). The outer shell is a water and wind resistant 3M Scotchlite material that fluoresces brightly when illuminated. I'm not sure how rip-resistant the outer shell is. I routinely have to walk around trailers at work and am concerned that the shell might get caught on an exposed rivet or metal edge and tear the garment. That said, for the price, I'm willing to assume that risk. UPDATE: The outer shell appears to be holding up rather well to my nightly abuse. I've gotten stuck on plenty of jagged edges along the sides of various trailer types, and I still haven't managed to tear it. That is good. Grease and grime show up very quickly and stand out when juxtaposed against the reflective shell material, which is not good but to be expected. This thing is actually uncomfortably hot at temperatures above 40 degrees fahrenheit. This jacket is not for southern climes. I find myself taking it off in the cab of the truck because I'm sweating too much. Better for outdoor use. Oh yes, and because the neck is pretty much open, you are really going to want a scarf to wear with it on a very cold day/night. UPDATE 2: After wearing this for several months, I find that there is a lot of piling around the cuffs, and I now have one tear in the 3M Scotchlite shell. I don't fault the jacket for the rip; anything would have ripped eventually with the jagged metal parts I squeeze around all day every day. I'm not going to take away any stars, because the jacket was only $60 some odd dollars. I figure I'll get another season or two out of this one before replacing.

Nice Jacket
This jacket is really nice! My wife likes it better than the dirty old orange one I have! I ordered the XXL size and was expecting it to be a little looser fit to get a hooded fleece under it. So I would say they run a little small. Just so you know I am 5' 11" and 225lbs. Update: I have had this jacket for 2 weeks now. It is very warm and wind proof! I have no doubt I will stay warm down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Above 40 it is actually too warm to wear it. Good Luck God Bless!

Great purchase.
I work outdoors, at night in an area with heavy semi truck traffic and this jacket is a lifesaver. The jackets lining is sufficient enough to keep you comfortable when its 15 degrees outside and quite windy (I was wearing a hoodie as well). The reflective stripes are brilliant and you really stand out when hit by headlights. Stops wind and rain in it's tracks. My wife has washed it several times in the machine with regular detergent and it cleans up fairly well (considering I usually have fifth wheel grease on my clothes it did very well). The fit was a bit large. I usually wear a 3x in winter jackets (I wear several layers) so I ordered a 2x based on other reviews and it fit perfectly. I imagine ordering one size smaller than you normally wear will work out for most people. The radio loops (shoulder loops) are perfectly positioned so that my radio mic is right where it needs to be and the included badge loop sewed on easily via the embroidery hide away system. Overall I think it's a great jacket.

Comfortable fit; I thought it would be kind of a rubberized finish. It's not.maybe scotch-guarded fabric. This sort of thing never seems to be waterproof for outdoor carpenters, but I guess I'll wait and see. Delivery occurred several days after I ordered it, after the week long deluge at work.

Great for not as frigid Alberta winter days
Hubby loves this jacket and was so happy I bought it for him. A nice in- between jacket for those not -40C winter days in Alberta.
