It works
Perused the reviews; some are happy some are not. I'm happy. I'm into other things now but for many years I was heavy and seriously into the hobby and I know my stuff so there's that. My sister decided she wanted fish so she bought a ten-gallon bowl and two nice lion-head golds. Long story short; she knows nothing and fancies her fish as potted plants or Christmas ornaments so I'm coaching her and the first thing I did was grab an inexpensive under-gravel filter and pump; I figured even if it only lasted for a week or two it would keep the fishies going until I could set her up with something better. Well, this filter and primo little pump is doing the job just fine. This primo little pump is as quiet as any other I've ever owned and it's perfect for this situation. The goldies are happy and growing, the bowl looks cool and clean and my sister split for the summer so their in my care now. All I can tell you is what I've experienced and so far, so good. I would absolutely buy this kit again, yes. Not everyone agrees with me and I get that; I've bought a few turkeys on Amazon myself. Five stars. I didn't expect this but it's the truth.

Two Happy Goldfish!!
So far so good. I had my new fish bowl of water ready and waiting. The little 1/2 gal. bowl that I previously had for 2 goldfish was really too small for 2. It got cloudy and needed cleaned/water changed every day. When I received my pump/bubbler I was very pleased that it was in excellent condition and I had no trouble installing it in my new, larger 1 gal. bowl. I have 2 happy fish, and already they seem to enjoy playing in the bubbles, even the large bubble-spurts that come up every few seconds. Thank you very much! PS: And I am sorry if anyone saw my very negative review and statement that I was returning the item this morning! I am very sorry! I am KEEPING the filter/bubbler! I discovered after all that it was NOT the filter causing the water to turn soo very cloudy after only 12 hrs that I could hardly see my fish! Rather, it was the type of weekend feeder block that I had put in last night! That feeder had said it would not cloud the water, but evidently with air and bubbles circulating against it and in the water, it DOES! I DO apologize for my rant on this item! I am happy to see it WILL work for me! Thank you!

Quality has deteriorated.
I have a vintage filter in a bowl at school that is one piece and heavy duty. I've set up a bowl at home and wanted the same, round, under gravel bowl filter. I couldn't remember the brand but this looked like the one. If it is, the quality has deteriorated significantly. It is in two levels; an outer ring and a raised inside circle. I guess so the air stone can fit under the pipe. Well, on mine all of the tabs except for two were broken on the inner circle. And I'm talking new out of the package. They are so flimsy they are thin like paper. At least the two remaining tabs were opposite each other, so the inside just sort of tilted back and forth. I am careful to hold it stable as I fear one of those last two tabs will break. I'll be setting it in the bowl and covering it with gravel tomorrow so hopefully all will go well. I did have some trouble getting the airstone set in it. The hole is too small for the tubing so you must stick the stem of the airstone through far enough so the tubing will slip over it. But the stem of the airstone has a thick base and then tapers off so if you don't stick it through the hole far enough the tubing never reaches the part of the airstone thick enough to hold it in place. All in all, poor design and flimsy execution. I would not recommend this product to anyone and I will not purchase another one. I know there is at least one other brand. If worse comes to worse, I'll just bring mine home from school as there are no fish in that bowl so it doesn't really need a filter.

Love the filter after a simple adjustment!
I ready many reviews of people complaining about the big bubbles that would form under the filter then escape in one gigantic blub way too intense for the beta fish. I tried adjusting the air flow up and down, I tried putting a big rock on the filter to try to stop it. But still giant bubbles. The giant bubbles were dislodging my plants and traumatizing my fish. After 2 days I decided to remove the air stone. Well then the air hose wouldn’t fit through the air stone hole. So my husband to my rescue, easily enlarged the hole. I pushed the air hose up into the lift tube about a half an inch and viola! Success! No more giant bubbles. Happy fish, happy plants, happy me!

Modified Stem using Dremel Cut Wheel
This works well in our office ~1 gallon tank. I had to shorten the stem to keep the filter underwater. I did this with a dremel using a cut wheel. I cut about a 1/2 inch tall piece off the base of the stem, and just enough from the top of the stem to insert the filter. The piece from the top fit inside the piece from the base. (It stuck out from the bottom a bit so I cut it even) The modified stem fit into the screen base as before, but is now only 1/2 inch tall. There is about 3/4 inch of water above the top of the filter now, and the water line is about 3/8 inch from the top edge of the tank.

Fish almost scare to dead.
I usually don't do reviews on a product right after I get it. This time I thing it is appropriate to do so this early. First of all the idea is great, and welcome, however there is a really big flow. The big flow is the air stone that it's include in the product. It is too big, because of the the size and the position it needs to be, the air does not properly pass trough the filter and some escape on the bottom of the stand, in the stand the air gets trap making a really big bobble. When the bobble gets release it makes a cracking sound, and that is what scares the fish, right now my fish is recovering from over stress, in A different tank. The big bobble may not be a problem if you have sand and you put the filter's stand under the gravel. I would have given a full 5 starts if it did not scared my fish close to dead. For now I just give 3, my original score would be 2.5. This may go up if the issue with the air stone gets fixed.

This is a bubbler, not a filter
All this did was move the water around, really. I have just one snail and one dwarf frog in a 7L fishbowl, and it didn't keep the water clean at all.
