For Emergencies or a bedtime transition
If you had candles or oil lamps as a kid - some of us were using those in the 1980s - you know that candles and oil lamps are either emergency use or daily use items. Candles - see Bath and Bodyworks - are so much a part of what people use at home today the idea of a candle that isn't a three wick, scent spewing color coordinated chunk of interior design may seem absurd. But a slow burning, time limited candle that you can watch go out as you prepare to sleep has some very specific uses. For me it is the transition from the bright lights and digital noise that I am inundated with to an analog environment that the brain craves and that I find helps with sleep. The candle meets those criteria and only misses a five star review on two points - 1) the mechanism that controls the time 2) The chimney glass. I used this for about two months before the chimney shattered - I've since replaced it - and the cause of that was the candle collar. The candle collar is made of two pieces of metal that lock around the width of candle you've selected and serves to cut of the flame at the end of the allotted time by chocking off available fuel for the wick to burn. Seating that - both around the candle and the on the base- is fiddly and there isn't a confirming "click" or positions that confirms it is properly seated. There is a tendency for the collar to sit too low or unlevel in the base. But that isn't the problem that knocked a star off of this, it was when the collar popped open after twenty minutes, tilted sideways causing the flame to heat one side of the chimney and then the metal collar dropped open shattering the chimney. I attribute this to user error and ordered a replacement chimney - reviewed elsewhere - and have returned to using this unit without any major issues. It is the type of candle I would use for "end of the day" lighting in a power out situation when it isn't serving as a bedtime wind down candle. Key points are common sense, use on an even surface, keep it away from anything flammable, pay close attention to setup and double check the collar is setting level and is fully locked so that it cannot unseat itself during use.

1 hr candle works great but wish I had choice of bigger one
This is a 40 hr candle that we use in a holder that allows us to light it for an hour and it automatically extinguishes. It is great for getting rid of odors in our kitchen. It would have been a 5 star if, when purchasing, I had seen the available 60 hr one, which I would have preferred. Amazon’s choices are sometimes not visible until after I have purchased. Drives me crazy.

It's an old-fashioned product. You either accept this or you don't.
I'm a little confused by some of the bad reviews. The 20-minute-per-inch burn time may be a slight overestimate, but overall I'm satisfied with the product. The thin glass and metal simply require extra care when handling. If you bought this expecting to be able to bang it around, I'm not sure what to tell you. I also don't find it particularly difficult to feed the wax through the clamp for relighting. The parts of my product work just fine. It's designed based on lamps that existed well before electricity, so IMO, some less-than-perfect fitting and elbow grease are to be expected. All that said, it is possible the manufacturers have improved the product between some of the bad reviews and my purchase. For me, the non-electric functionality and pretty aesthetic make the product worth it.

I don’t hate them BUT…
They are a pain in the butt. If you want to spend nearly $40 each for sore fingers from getting them to sit right and knowing you may possibly need stitches from the really thin & loose glass then please go ahead and buy these. THEY ARE PRETTY! (sitting way across the room, safely away from people) I purchased 2 even after reading all the other bad reviews. I love making myself suffer I guess. One lantern is so tight that the glass feels glued in and was nearly impossible to remove the metal top or even get it back on. The second lantern everything about it is slightly smaller and loose glass all over, so small in fact that the metal clip will not go in or out of its proper opening. I can carry it by the candle clip. The bubbled bit that holds the clip feels like plastic not metal. I don’t know what else to say. The candles caused me misery, pain, and regret. I am keeping them though and am going to keep trying to adjust them because darn it, they are kind of lovely.

The heat of the flame shatters the glass
I should have believed the reviews that stated how fragile the glass is. If the small diameter candle bends and gets close to the glass while lit, it can and does easily cause the glass to explosively shatter all around in medium to tiny shards everywhere. I was sitting near it when the glass exploded. Each shard is burning hot when it hits things, becoming a fire hazard, a burn hazard, and a cut hazard. A shard melted a tiny spot in my carpet that I was able to somewhat fix. One of my fingers was slightly burned trying to hurriedly get the burning hot shards off carpet and paper before it could cause damage and/or start a fire. After I thought I had cleaned up all of the shards, my bare foot found one by stepping on it and being punctured getting blood on the carpet. I would just throw away the Hurricane glass and not take the risk it causes. It is a neat idea, but in execution, it is not practice. Each inch of candle does not last very long at all, and if you pull out more, and can cause a fire hazard or injury as I noted above due to the glass being thin and fragile. Also a time or two it caused soot which I thought could not happen with Beeswax candles. I bought their larger setup for a different room and am hoping it doesn't have the same problems. Also on this smaller version, it is a pain to pull apart the metal that holds the candle in order to pull up more inches of candle.

Looks nice, not sure how well it operates
I only paid $23 for it on sale. Using it in our staff party Santa gift swap. Looks nice, not sure how well it operates. Update: The person that got this gift loves it. Works perfect.
