Make sure to do water changes soon after initial use

The directions for this product tells you to rinse it lightly before adding to your tank. Following that advice, however, will leave some 'dust' in the medium when it goes into your tank. I use this stuff in my fish-only/invertibrate tanks, but I noticed that if I don't do water changes in about a week, the fish start to act weird (my fox face would dart suddenly, flash its dorsal fins a lot, and generally had stressed darkened colors) and my coral beauty starts to develop lateral line disease. I believe the root cause to be the residual dust this product puts into the water. As a habit, I don't do weekly water changes on my tank because the only downside in a fish-only tank is a rise in nitrates, which is not particularly dangerous for most fish/inverts, so the dust from this product would stay in the tank for a few weeks and cause the above issues over time. Every time we took the coral beauty out and put it in the sump of a reef tank we have that DOES get frequent water changes, the lateral line disease would disappear. It would reappear when put back in the fish-only tank. I have found that if I do water changes more frequenly than usual at first after replacing this filter material, the dust problem goes away and the product does what I need it to do (eliminate algae). It's a good product, just make sure to do a water change within a week if you don't do that anyway, and then probably the week after....beyond that, you can probably get away with bi-weekly or less water changes until you replace it again. The coral beauty has been fine ever since and the foxface has settled down and seems much more comfortable in the tank since ive done as described. If you have a habit of doing weekly water changes, this won't be an issue at all.

My cichlids did not like this

Bought this expecting my 55 gallon tank to be extra clear and clean for a longer time. Instead, it made my tank brown and stressed my cichlids out. Had to remove it immediately 1 day after, and do another water change. My Whisper EX70 filter does a much better job at keeping my tank clear.

Very effective product

I have been using Chemipure for 27 years in my aquarium's canister filter. My canister baskets are large and require two bags in one basket. I will clean out my canister filter in three months and just rinse off the two bags, then three months later I will replace the two bags and repeat the process. My aquarium is a 50 gallon freshwater tropical tank utilizing a canister and undergravel filtration system with a weekly partial water change. I must tell you that my water is pristine! My fish are healthy and active. It's very common for visitors to comment on the clearness of the tank. And there has never been a smell. I have only used Chemipure so I can't comment on other products but I stick with this one because of the water quality I have. I highly recommend this product.

Great for Malawi Cichlids

Chemi-pure is a bag of active carbon with ion absorption resins mixed in. It is a chemical filter that provides chemisorption and diffusion of gases, and the ion absorption resins as the name implies absorb dissolved ions in the water through a process known as ion exchange. It doesn't do anything for cloudy water - but it isn't designed to, so I'm not sure what the last guy was expecting. It's like buying hand lotion and saying it doesn't do anything for sweaty armpits. For cloudy water he should have relied on frequent small water changes, or a diatomaceous earth filter. For what Chemi-pure is specified to be used for, it is my favorite chemical filtration for my Malawi's. I typically stick two 10oz bags in the top bucket of my Eheim canister filter and fill the gaps with filter floss. On a rule of thumb, one 10oz bag is good for 40 gallons or less. It lasts about 3 months max.
