Nice little started pack.
These were part of a gift for a 9 y/o to learn whittling. ( under supervision and instruction from his dad). These were the perfect size and easy to use for his first projects. I think his mom ordered him more.

Great for carving
Teaching my son to carve and this wood was perfect. Used it to make an ancient ship and it carved great. No flaws. Great piece of wood.

For carvers of all skill levels.
Very good entry level wood. Not the creamiest or softest but if you're carving something meant to be a bit on the hardy side this is the wood to do it with. I got it to carve a ring for my father for his birthday. It carves nice with an exacto knife, and sands to a very smooth finish. Didn't feel like it needed laquering either, it was quite smooth after being hit with 3 different sand paper grains. All in all good for carving something that will be a bit more than just a decoration, but is also good for a beginner with a knife but no wood to carve, this is a great start for the money.

Very odd sizes in my bag
Wood is nice and easy to cut. This was the first time I got really odd sizes and small wood in a bag. Not a big deal, just know it might happen with grab bag type stuff.

Good, clean, quality therapy at a superb price
I got to say, after not having picked up a knife for many years, this was just what i needed to pick myself up out of my funk. This stuff carves like butter if your knife is stropped food. I did find a few blemishes, but who cares. I'm relaxing and whittling. For the price and therapeutic relaxation you can't beat it. Plus i gave one of the bigger pieces to my kid to try her skills whittling. Will most definitely be buying more

1.75 x 5 is Pine and not 5 inches!!!
When you search for basswood, up pops Walnut Hollow offering in what appears to be basswood inmultiple sizes and you think cool, I can get different sizes for my projects. Unfortunately, it is a bait and switch because 1.75 x 1.75 x 5 , 3 pieces is not basswood it is pine. Yes, it clearly states pine whittlers kit but under a basswood search. Further, read the description very closely because it is not 1.75 x 1.75 x 5 but rather 1.75 x 1.75 x 4.3 and 5.2 and 6. Yup, it is all there and yup, I should have read it. Shame on Walnut Hollow for grouping this in with basswood and "misleading" a bunch of carvers selling them pine. Shame on them for labelling the wood length as one thing in the description and something else in order. I bought this twice consider me a fool. That said it was relatively clear pine but harderived to whittle than basswood.

A good carving wood
It's a nice, soft wood, but the blocks are a little small. If you were giving this to someone who has never carved, they might cut themselves because of the size, but other than that, it would be a good buy, just make sure that you have a carving set with good grip and you're smart about your carving.

Good for small wood carvings
Good quality wood, and the size makes it easy for beginners who want to make small carvings. The shape does limit you to what you can carve i.e. you will need different wood if you are looking to carve more rounded objects. If you are doing detailed work, this wood might be a tad bit flaky. All in all, a great pack for beginners like myself.

I am sure that those who read my chronicles, do not believe that asking for a good review means a good review; because if I do that I will lose all my credibility and a reviewer you give not his own belief but sells his favors to anyone you can pay, in money, compliments or any other form of flattery or gifts and so on would not only be worthless to others but a shame to his own self. I know very well those kinds; you know that whenever I review an item, I put my word in the balance if I make a mistake I will apologize but I am not here to write fairytales about unworthy products because I received a letter by those who own the company of Whittlers kit. Generally, the review is already written.But not this time. My readers, I must excuse myself for such a preamble, but sometimes things should be said frankly. Now back to business: this wood id for scooters of any age, it is like Tintin for those of 7 to 70 years old, so by essence, this wood is not merely a piece of a tree, it is a perfect piece of tree and them took the effort to cut it in small pieces for those who begin or those who cut small things like pieces of Chess. I bought a pack when I opened it I did take the tiny blocks one by one, to look for the smallest imperfection like knots, cuts, anything that could jeopardize the result of long hours of hard work.We have to understand that between Michelangelo is or was, there are some humans who live forever through the work they have left us, I am nothing, a beginner, a child who have given his best to be Michelangelo. so If you gave him bad blocks, the good wood will never have a chance to communicate with the carver. I think this company has earned five stars. There is my friend's something you can do, besides telling me if it was of any importance or not, leave a message and we shall discuss the issues. Nice for small carvings & practice
The only thing I disliked about these, was that I felt that all the blocks should have been 50% bigger. Having said that the quality of the wood is good & they are nice for practicing on. Hence 4 stars.
