This is not a toy!
This item is meant to be apart of your train display, not a toy for kids. In reading the other reviews, most of the bad reviews were because this fact was not understood. I love this crossing! It fit perfectly with the EZ tracks, the gates both go all the way down when the train crosses through. Because this is a mechanical setup (not electrical), the gates don't go down until the train is in the roadway, but this does not bother me. My track is black with steel alloy rail, whereas this item is nickel rail. My train doesn't get as good of power over the nickel rail as it does over the steel, but it makes it through the crossing. Also note that you must be using an HO scale engine to make it through this gate crossing because there is a plastic plate down the middle of the track that the train goes over (this plate is what closes the gates). If your train is too light (like the thomas sets) it will get stuck. Something I didn't think of when i bought this also related to this plastic plate. I knew buying this that it wasn't a toy, but i thought my son would have fun having his hot wheels cross over the track using this gate crossing. Well, when you "drive" your hot wheel over the track, it pushes down on the plate and closes the gates! hahaha I should have known better, but now my son has fun launching the cars through the crossing before the gates can go down :). Overall we love this gate crossing, but it's not perfect.

Good Enough
Model railroading is an expensive hobby. This piece works well enough for what you get, although the arms do not stay down but rather bounce a lot while your train is passing.

gates easily break and don't go down in time
Just got this and 1 gate fell off when I was examining it. Be careful if this happens because there is a tiny metal plate on the very inside back of the gate that falls out and you need this to keep the gates up when not in use. When running a weighted flatbed car by hand over the section, the first gate doesn't go down until the front edge of the car gets almost to the gate. The second gate doesn't go down until the car is almost completely across the road section. Both gates should go down at the same time at least 3 or 4 inches before getting to the first gate and the gates shouldn't go back up until the last car is 3 or 4 inches pass the road section. I'll have to try and configure a spring loaded but light-weight board that goes completely across this piece and extends 3 or 4 inches on each side to activate the gates before the engine gets to the crossing and well after the last car passes the gates. This should also keep the gates from bobbing up and down when the train is crossing. Also, I wanted to use 2 for a double trach crossing so when I get a second gate system, I'll have to cut both inside road pieces so they will match up to look like a double track crossing, which also means removing the 2 inside crossing gates. I also notice since I'm using Atlas code-83 tracks, there is a tiny height difference between this gate rails and the 2 pieces of Atlas code-83 rails connected on each side so I'll have to file these down evenly. Odd that something that is wandted and needed for a nice layout is so cheaply and badly designed! I would gladly pay more for an extremely functional double track/double gate crossing!

Gates won't stay down
Gates flap up and down as the trains and cars are not heavy enough to make the pressure plates hold them down. Its a normal issue everyone who buys this gate has, I ended up gluing the gates in the down position other then that its a great item but sadly I can't give it more then 3 stars cause of this.

Not great
It's ok if you're going to use it in a non active rail setup. When it's going though, it's not great. Most locos aren't heavy enough to keep the mechanism pressed down the whole way, so the arms just flap up and down as the train goes over, and it looks awful. Ended up gluing the mechanism/arms in the down position. Was also received with one arm broken, but that's more an issue just with getting rough in shipping. The piece was packed well in the box.
