Use with CAUTION! ETA: 10/30/2014; ETA 1/5/2015
I picked this stuff up after going through 3 algae blooms in my 10-gallon tank (including one really bad one, couldn't see two inches past it, and the other two being much more tame). Now, I've read MANY mixed reviews on this product before making my purchase, and I have one thing to say. This is basically Weed-B-Gone for aquatic environments. It's made to kill algae. It's safe for fish IF USED RESPONSIBLY. We've treated two tanks with this stuff: a 60 gallon, and 10 gallon. No fish died. The 60 gallon: heavily infested with algae, specifically the brown hair algae. Applied the recommended dose (1 tsp per 50 gallons, we did a full dose). In the tank live two Convict Ciclids, two loaches, two kissing gourami, one minnow, and one otocinclus catfish. The tank itself is very well established bacteria wise, and has an appropriate canister filter going with four sponges and bacteria media. The lights on it are low-light, with one low-light grower. NONE of the fish were affected in any way shape or form. The 10 gallon: houses my one Oranda goldfish, along with 7-8 trumpet snails. Previously had ghost shrimp in it, but took them out prior to treatment, then ended up dying from separate causes (put three in a bowl, two died, the rest were killed by the stress of my goldfish chasing them and trying to eat them, I don't plan on getting any more, lol). As I stated above, went through three algae blooms/cycles before I bought this, and has an AquaClear 30gal. filter going with two sponges and bacteria media. The light on this one is a 96wat four tube grow light. The light penetrates a solid inch into the gravel, it's intense. WHEN I DOSED MY 10 GALLON: bottle says 1ml/10 gallons. From what I'VE been personally taught from my boyfriend (his 60 gallon has been running for 10+ years with absolutely no problems), the more gravel that is in the tank, less water; resulting in a smaller dose. I put HALF of 1 ML in the tank. My goldfish is UNAFFECTED, and my snails are as happy as could be cruising around. After repeated dosages, and even one dose being a full dose, my fish is fine. And now after about two weeks, I've seen NO new algae growth, AT ALL. I'm going to continue treating the tank, as it is planted and the algae has taken a liking to the plants, but as far as I can say, nothing has perished in my tank using this product, other than algae. With more heavily infested tanks: from the 60 gallon, it's petrifying to watch. When you treat it, the water will cloud up almost IMMEDIATELY. And it is and was scary to see it happen so fast. It was back to normal clarity overnight. Further research into this also relieved that the chemical diminishes in 24 hours, being completely gone by 48 hours. Example: I haven't changed the water in my 10 gallon since I've started using it. By the amount of chemical I've put in, I'm positive my fish would've been long gone by now. But he's still in perfect shape and health. Everything being said: use this with CAUTION! This is not a magical algae fix (well, was for us....), this is made to kill algae, and I'm sure with inappropriate usage, will kill a lot more than algae, including what is printed on the label. When you put this in your tank, the amount used is VERY important. Algae is still a living plant, living plants produce oxygen, if you have enough algae and do a large enough dose of this stuff it will have such an immediate impact that you will BASICALLY suffocate all of your fish. If you have any doubts about getting this product, find something else. And if you get it, use your brain. It's easy to over-dose, and some things just don't work with some people. In my case, I began with a half dose, because my tank is one of the fairly smaller ones, and I wanted to see just how my fish reacted to it. I gave it a day, then repeated the half dose, waited, continued with a full dose over the course of a week and a half. It's not the products fault, as it's working BEAUTIFULLY for our own tanks and MANY others. ETA: After moving twice and unfortunately losing my entire colony of snails, I've finally got only my 10 gal up and running as a snail tank right now. (It did have a Beta in it, but he passed away.) It was having some problems with Algae, so I slapped some of this in it, with previous encounters working just fine I didn't have a second thought. When I had lost my Malaysian Trumpet snail colony, I searched high and low to get some more and restart. I did, but the Malaysians I have now are.... different from the other Malaysians I had preciously (these are longer, have a sharper pointed shell, and are overall lighter--my previous ones were darker, larger in width, and had a more blunt pointed shell)--my new Trumpets reacted to this product, and after monitoring them for about 20 minutes and quick reacting, was able to save most of them and get the Algaefix out of the water. I don't know if these snails are just a slightly different variety of Malaysian Trumpets (the physical appearance tells me they DEFIANTLY are, but I haven't researched deep enough to be sure) but they are EXTREMELY SENSITIVE to this, and WILL kill them. So if you have ANY kind of crustacean/snail, USE WITH CAUTION! I can safely say that if you have my first "variety" of MTS, they're cool with it, but this second colony threw me for a huge loop. ETA 1/5/2015 My 10 gal planted became heavily infested with pest snails that came with a Banana plant, and I can safely say, large doses of this promptly got rid of all of them. (One large initial dose with filter off, then two more large doses after that 2 ~ 3 days apart!)

last ditch
I don't really like to use additives but one tank was very problematic. Not for the typical reasons. I wont go into detail. I will say it was a battle. I did figure it out eventually and stopped using this. This works but be very careful. It did tick some of my corals off. Nothing died, and none of the "expert" level fish had problems. That was at less than half doses. Like others mention use a half dose or less to start. Also do more water changes than planned, and run an air stone. Clean your substrate/ornaments/rocks, and pull out as much algae possible before using. Not in one big move though, do it in stages. For example I did a lot of cleaning, and two water changes before even attempting. My thoughts are that a lot of people have very dirty tanks. Causing the oxygen to crash, and other things to go out of whack with this additive. Don't let dead algae build up causing ammonia, and other pollution as a result. Also don't let this chemical bioaccumulate causing potentially toxic levels. Also obviously, don't dump it right in your fishes face. Dose it slowly diluted at night time into the flow so that can be avoided. Either of those cases could be a disaster. Do the water changes before next dose. I think that will give the safest chances if deciding to use this. Use if you like then get it where it needs to be, and keep on top of it. Then one shouldn't have to use anymore.

Amazing product!
I took very good care of my tank and it looked like a swamp. I couldn’t figure it out. Tried a variety of products. But this is the one that finally worked! Took about three days to go from a swamp to completely crystal clear. So thankful for this product.

Really works!
I moved my fish tank to a new area and left a small lamp on for the first few nights by mistake. The algae was INSANE in my tank. I tried to clean it and change the filter but nothing was working. Got this and used it twice and it was perfection!

Works well
Keeps black mold at bay but the snails do not appreciate it as they were quick to exit the water after the first day of treatment.

Worked super fast!
We were suddenly having an algae issue for the last few weeks with out tank and I could not figure out that algaewas the issue to start. Cleaning, water changes, new filters clarifier (water just looked cloudy to start so didn't realize it was algae), none of it was working. Finally I ordered this and put it in the tank tonight, with in a hour the water was crystal clear! Super happy with our purchase and super happy with how fast it worked!

Works as Said but not advised
Using RO water helps reduce the growth of brown algae. Tap water being rich in salts and chemicals are the primary reason for algae along with higher nitrogen. Algaefix helps keep your tank cleaner for longer, reducing the need of frequent water changes. But don't expect anything drastic. It takes few days to do its work and should be used strictly as per direction and avoid pouring it directly into the aquarium as your fish may come to the surface thinking food and consume a deadly concentration. Mix it in a cup of water and pour it in your aquarium evenly. Update after few months. Even less than recommended dosage is proving deadly to my fishes. In the last application, couple of danios were on the ground gasping for breath to save them I had to do a immediate water change and move them to a different aquarium. While it is effective in controlling algae of all forms, it is suggested to move all plants and fishes for couple of days to a separate aquarium and then apply. As of now I have lost 3 fishes and one plant but algae growth disappeared for 5-7 days post application, but it won't stop them from coming back. Instead of using biocide my advise would be to stick to water changes and regulating feeding.

Amazing product!!!! Must buy if you have algae issue
This is a super good product and absolutely safe too. I have a 67 G heavily planted aquarium with lots of Tetras and Angels (and almost 12 hrs of Neo Helios lighting) and as happens with new tanks, I had a lot of hair algae on all my broad leafed plants. I dosed at 80% of the recommended dose every 3 days and within about 10 days (3 doses), I see most of them have vanished. Some green algae is yet to go but I see good reduction. None of my fish/snails have died. Must buy product if you want assured and safe algae elimination.

Tangible Results Still Too Early To Comment
Too early for me to really comment on the efficacy of this product bu It do see tangible results upon using this product for the second day. My Gold Fish tank is badly infected with brown algae and it has spread to an extent my tank looks very poorly maintained even though I do weekly water change. Upon using this product for the second day, I noticed the algae has become weaker and has stopped spreading as aggressively as it was. If I'm not wrong, the algae is now pale in colour which is a potential indication that it has started dying. It's still too early to really say if I really recommend this product but it's definitely the best product available here. Precaution : Ensure you use the product as directed.
