Differs from the Other Major Brand of Closed-Cell-Foam Saddle Float, but Just About as Good
Update: Since writing my earlier review, I have had a chance to use this saddle float and the "other float" in the ocean and in a swimming pool. I have found that the Airhead saddle float is a bit more likely to flip over backwards than its competitor; that is, this one seems to have a bit less buoyancy in the back, so it flips over backwards more easily. I suspect this depends in part on the shape (or to be more precise, the distribution of buoyancy) of the person sitting in the float. But for me, the Airhead doesn't work quite as well in this regard. Original Review: I purchased one each of the Air Head Sun Comfort Pool Saddle (this product) and the other major brand of closed-cell-foam saddle float. They differ, but, to me, one is not better overall than the other. The biggest difference between the Airhead and the “other float” (avoiding mentioning other product by name in review) is that the surface of the Airhead is textured with tiny grooves (perhaps about 2 grooves per millimeter?). I can see how the Airhead might chafe one's bare legs where it passes between them, and at least one reviewer has said so. I think this may be more of a problem for women or men wearing "Speedo" type bathing suits, because my bathing suit (shorts) protected my bare skin from contact with the float. The surface of the “other float” is smooth and a bit rubbery, but not slippery. Some people may find the smooth surface of the “other float” more comfortable. The Airhead seems to be made of a stiffer material than the “other float”, and big grooves are molded across the narrow part of the Airhead, where the saddle folds between one’s legs, apparently to overcome the stiffness and facilitate bending there. There are three such grooves in the Airhead, each about ½ inch wide and ¼ inch deep. The grooves are aligned so that the deepest part of each groove on one side is opposite the deepest part of a groove on the other side. Thus, between the bottoms of the grooves, the thickness of the float is about half what it is elsewhere. One might fear that the Airhead would tear in these thin and narrow places, but I don’t recall any reviews mentioning this as a problem. The “other float” seems spongier than the Airhead, but when I squeezed each one between my thumb and forefinger, I found them to be equally compressible. The “other float” is perceptibly more flexible than the Airhead, but not what I would call floppy. Although the Airhead is a bit smaller than the “other float”, in both length and width, they both provide equal flotation; maybe the Airhead is a bit less dense than the other one. I am 5 ft 11 inches tall and weigh 185 pounds; both floats suspended me so that the tops of my shoulders were out of the water but my underarms were submerged. As one who has carried several of these things on a boat, I can tell you smaller is better. Both the Airhead and the “other float” are closed cell foam, and I consider that to be a much better construction than the other kind of saddle float available, the kind made of open cell foam coated in vinyl. I have owned some of these vinyl-coated saddle floats, and I found that the surfaces tend to stick together if the floats are stacked one on another. Reportedly—although I haven’t experienced it myself—the coating sometimes peels off. If the coating peels off or is cut open, water infiltrates the foam, a serious product failure in my book. I haven't owned the Airhead long enough to know about its durability. I have had several of the smooth-skinned saddle floats, and they have lasted for years. In most cases, they were lost (floated away at the beach) before they tore. Tearing seems to be the only failure mode. The two I have had longest still work, although they have torn superficially around the handles, which are simply oval holes at each end. Overall, I guess I go for the smooth-skinned ones, but the Airheads seem like a good product. I may get some more of each.

Buoyant but stiff
It’s definitely buoyant but pretty stiff. I use it to float on in a sitting position ut it rubs my inside thighs a little roughly. Also concerned that the coating seems thin on the inside making me wonder if it’ll be water logged in another couple months

Attractive, Dries Fast, Stays Clean, Flexible, Floats Well, Can Be Rough On Exposed Skin
Bright eye catching colors. Dries fast. Flat and easy to stack and store. Floats well and generally comfortable with light use. However, it's been hot and we've been spending a lot of time in the pool every day using these saddle as well as the same brand of pool noodles and we learned that the cloth like texture of these saddles and floats, while it feels nice initially, can actually be rough on exposed wet skin. When you are swimming, there is a lot of exposed skin wet everywhere. It can literally rub skin raw and you can tell this is happening if you see irritation that looks and feels like a rash or mild sun burn. My daughter had them all over her belly from sitting in the saddle for a few hours. I have some on my arms and on my chin from using the noodle. We have normal skin. I would recommend you consider carefully if you have sensitivities/delicate skin. I actually got a fantastic deal on these saddles though. I bought three of them on sale for $12 each (they usually retail for double) so they were terrific value. For now we will make sure to be more mindful and wear our rash guards when using these. But when it comes time to replace, I might shop around for another style/material. Also, I don't know about longevity. We've had ours for 5 weeks and with good care and making sure not to leave them in the pool or sun after use, they are holding up well in Southern California weather. I hope they last a couple of swimming seasons. All in all, these are good. Attractive, dries fast, stays clean, flexible, floats well.

Great for multiple body sizes
Bought 2 for use at our lake house. It’s been used by men and women which included non plus and plus sized bodies. For the men it held them up and most found it comfortable, but with extended use it can get uncomfortable because their body weight (although it’s not full body weight because they’re floating in water) is pressing down on their b*lls which are sitting in the firm piece that goes between the legs. Maybe a scooped out pocket for them to lay in would make it more comfortable, but all in all the men adjusted periodically and had a great time using them. Women found it comfortable to straddle. No irritation from it rubbing or anything. We had folks who can swim and folks who cannot swim on them. The folks who cannot swim were able to balance on them very well. It was the first time that some of them have been this relaxed in water. They obviously stayed in the shallow parts of the lake, but that they were out in natural water and enjoying themselves was amazing. We own some of the generic ones that are thicker, I found these much more comfortable. So far they have been durable. They were purchased end of season and have only been used by family, but we’ll see how well they hold up next season with use by rental guests. If there are changes I will update my review.

300lbs. and I floated just fine
I was apprehensive in purchasing these based upon the complaints that it would not float a 150-200 lb. person. At 300 lbs, I wasn't sure it would work. We've used "Lazy Buns" and "VOS" saddles. The lazy buns work great, but did not last more than a couple seasons with minimal usage. The VOS seem very flimsy. But hope with gentle use and care, they will last longer than the lazy buns. These however seem to be a bit more rugged. They are slightly smaller than the other two mentioned, but they floated me just fine. No you are not going to float with half your body out of the water like shown in the photos, but none of these will do that. It does keep your head above water allowing you to float around while holding your beverage of choice in one hand for as many hours as you'd like. That is what it is all about. Plus the discount price of $22 vs. $40+ for the other options is a no brainer.

Not for AquaFit Class
This would be great to take to the beach or for the pool to lounge on. I was looking for something instead of an aqua belt for an AquaFit class and it wasn’t what I wanted nothing.
