I purchased this Kyocera DS-38 sharpener to use with my ceramic knives, because even with new diamond plates, with grits from 400 to 3000 in small steps, I was not able to resharpen my ceramic knives properly. The DS-38 has two diamond coated discs, mounted on a single shaft mounted on plastic bearings, with spring loaded axial positioning. The shaft is coupled in line to the drive motor, that works with four AA size batteries, and is commanded by the gray push button on the side of the unit. When you turn the motor on, with no blade being sharpened, the sharpener sounds like a cheap toy; it does not sound much better when loaded. The knife blade is positioned in the sharpener, with movable spring loaded side guides, that push the knife blade against the clear, v-shaped center guide; the bottom stop for the blade are soft plastic rollers, that touch the sharp edge of the blade. These rollers, after a couple of passes with my ceramic knife, already have groves made by the cutting edge of the blade. The design of the sharpener is such that knifes with handles that cover the lower part of the blade, will not be sharpened beyond 1-5/16" or 33 mm from the handle. Please see pictures. This would leave almost half of the length of a 3" knife without sharpening. After a couple of passes of my great Harbor Freight Tool ceramic knife, I opened the dust collection bin and was able to see the diamond discs. Both of them had ceramic dust in just sections of their circumference, indicating that they are bent, or tilted on the shaft. Please see picture. I wonder if the design of the non powered DS-20 Kyocera Sharpener, would be better to sharpen most of the length of the blade, at close to half of the price of the DS-38. The edge I was able to obtain in the ceramic knife was acceptable, but not as good as it was from the factory. For a long steel knife, which always was difficult to sharpen, the edge achieved was great. I am still looking for a good ceramic knife sharpener.

portable knife sharpener just not powerful enough for steel knife
The design is very good, very easy to use and can leave very precise nice finish on steel or ceramic knife. However, battery powered engine is not big enough for heavy knifes. It stops the machine right away.

Its OK, but not brilliant
First thing I had to do was disassemble the unit to free the grind wheels which were stuck on the power shaft and not floating properly. Upside - I was able to take a pretty big chip out of the chef's knife and managed to put the edge back on without too much trouble. Downside - the motor is no where near powerful enough. It does encourage a slow, methodical approach which using a diamond hone requires, but it means holding the knife in a way that the blade was contacting the wheel light as a feather. One tip - use a few drips of water on the blade and the knife sharpens to a better edge. Do not soak the unit and dry it out regular with paper towel and clean the wheels once finished. Do not expect quick results - this is not for you if that's what you're looking for, but it will get you where you want to be if you take your time and have patience. It only really works with Kyocera knives, unless the other type you try to sharpen has a similarly thin blade and handler shape.

Works well for me
I have had a set of Kyocera knives for about 5 years and they had lost their original sharpness. Kyocera will sharpen your knives for free but by the time you pay for shipping both ways this looked like the best option. The knives I have are 7", 5" and 3" long and the only one that I cannot get the full length sharpened is the 3". On that one I was able to get about 1/2 of the length sharpened. The other two were able to be sharpened on the whole length. It was easy and took only a short time and it really made a difference. I think it was well worth the purchase.

It does sharpen, but not very well
This cannot get the knives as sharp as Kyocera used to make them when they had the free sharpening service. But it does improve the sharpness of the knives. If you eesharpen often it would work. So, not great, but great price

Disappointed operating procedure.
Very hard to get the proper pressure of the knife without stalling the grinding wheel. Concerned if the wheel will last very long. Do not know if I can buy a replacement when it does.

Ceramic knives are different
My wife dropped one of her brand new ceramic knives while unboxing them! Unfortunately, this resulted on a sizable chip in the edge. Being an accomplished honer of steel knives, i attempted - and succeeded - in removing the chip. However, I was not able to achieve the edge desired. This Kyocera sharpener allowed me to get the knife usably sharp. About 20 passes on each side to get the angle, and a few more passes to sharpen. However . . .. It could be more powerful. It is very easy to bog the motor down. It does eat batteries. It did, and and will to continue to do what I asked of it, however. I will be purchasing a Work Sharp device next time.

Sharpens great
Sharpener did what it was suppose to do on a ceramic Kyocera knife. No more micro chips and sharp as it was when we bought it. I thought I would be able to use it on my Wustoff knives, but the bolster wouldn't let me get to the heel of the blade. I would definitely recommend for ceramic Kyocera blades.

Good buy.
This i my second Kyocera sharpening device, first one I bought in Japan and it lasted 3 years, so no complaints. I am fanatical about sharp knives and sharpen after every day of usage. Not all Kyocera knives will fit, they have to be thin blade to work, and if so, these sharpeners do a good job. Stones are not appropriate for ceramics.

Battery operated. Lightly dragging the blade across the wheels stops them.
Did not sharpen the blade.
